Niels Nielsen
Danish-born and now based in New Zealand, Niels Nielson began his creative journey as a carpenter, arriving in Auckland at 19. He quickly made his mark designing "pole houses"—a fusion of Scandinavian design and Māori architectural principles.
Today, Nielson creates sculptural furniture using reclaimed materials: weathered wine barrels, timber from historic homes, and aged railway sleepers. At the heart of his practice is swamp kauri—ancient wood buried and preserved for nearly 2000 years after the cataclysmic Taupō eruption. Each piece carries the weight and wonder of deep time.
