"Having endured a pretty rough ferry crossing over Cook Strait the night before, I studied the weather map & wondered if conditions might clear that evening? What did I have to lose? So I made a detour from SH1 & headed for National Park. Just 1.5 hrs before sunset, it was still raining under low cloud cover, but as I neared the volcanic plateau, it was remarkable to witness the speed at which the clouds lifted. And with just enough clear sky in the west, this allowed me to continue capturing the changing light, right up until the sun dipped below the horizon. What a great way to end an already successful trip, this really was the icing on the cake!"
